In the Netherlands, approximately 50% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) are above the age of 45,
contributing to an increase in the risk, incidence, and number of comorbidities in these patients.
In the Netherlands, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the most prevalent comorbidities among
PLHIV and is predicted to be one of the greatest non-AIDS related disease burdens and causes of
mortality among PLHIV.
Effective risk assessment, diagnosis, and management of CVD in PLHIV are urgently needed, as
well as implementation of multidisciplinary interventions for PLHIV with increased risk of CVD with
the ultimate goal of improving the quality of life for PLHIV.
In this scientific exchange on HIV and CVD, we will discuss the diagnosis and management of CVD
in PLHIV, the main risk factors involved in the development of this disease (e.g. HIV, smoking, ART),
and finally the potential way to address these challenges in clinical practice.
