Hemiplegic shoulder pain (HSP) in some of the most common upper limb complications after a stroke. Having a prolonged period of shoulder pain has a negative influence on the eventual rehabilitation outcome, on the functional use of the upper limb, on the duration of hospitalization and on the quality of life of the patient. It is therefore important to know the background of this disabling complication and how to deal with it in daily practice. The following aspects will be discussed: shoulder pain from a multidimensional perspective, biomechanical alterations following stroke, clinical examination of the post-stroke shoulder, essentials for shoulder therapy post-stroke.
The speaker works at VUB Brussels (Pain in motion research group). Her research focuses mainly on the evaluation of movement behavior of the shoulder complex, and how it is influenced by psychological and social factors, both in musculoskeletal and neurological patient populations.
