Target audience

This course is intended for a wide range of healthcare professionals (physiotherapists, doctors, nurses etc.) working in the field of respiratory medicine. Prior knowledge of ultrasound is not necessary.

Purpose of the training

We aim to provide education, training information and support to al respiratory professionals in the principles of lung and diaphragmatic ultrasound for effective assessment, diagnosis and monitoring of common respiratory pathologies such as pneumothorax, interstitial syndrome, consolidation and pleural effusion.

Based on the principles first described by Dr. Daniel Lichtenstein, this one-day course will equip clinicians to understand and perform the basic skills of pleural, lung and parenchymal and diaphragmatic ultrasound.

Contents of the training

Experienced lung and diaphragm ultrasound tutors will provide attendees with the opportunity to learn all about ultrasound of the respiratory system. We will provide you with all training, teaching materials and access to ultrasound machines with half the course programme dedicated to hands-on practice.

This theoretical training programme meets the requirements stated by the International expert statement on training standards for critical care ultrasonography by Cholley et al 2011.

Clinical case studies and examples will allow delegates to understand the ultrasound presentation fo common respiratory pathologies and how these findings fit into clinical practice.

After the course you will be able to make and interpret dynamic ultrasound images in a reliable and valid way to:

  • Review the anatomy of the thorax, diaphragm and sub-diaphragmatic organs
  • Identify the appearance of normal pleura an parenchyma
  • Identify normal diaphragmatic anatomy and function
