HPB surgeons increasingly can make clinical decisions based on the results of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). RCTs in HPB cover a wide variety of topics from preoperative management (e.g., biliary drainage) and perioperative chemotherapy (e.g., for colorectal liver metastases) to surgical techniques (e.g., pancreatic anastomosis). HPB surgeons should be familiar with the key RCTs that guidelines are based on. Moreover, they should be able to determine the validity of RCTs for a specific patient.

The objectives of this course are:

  1. To learn the definitive RCTs in HPB and liver transplantation that guidelines are based on
  2. To learn how to design, perform, and review an RCT
  3. To learn the ongoing RCTs and topics for future RCTs

Structure of each talk (30 min per talk)

  • Clinical case
  • Key RCTs using PICO format
  • Ongoing and future RCTs for unresolved topics
  • Back to the clinical case
  • Discussion: 5-10 min

Voting with app for case-related questions at beginning of each presentation

  • Do you know RCTs to support decision making for this patient?
  • Are these RCTs applicable to this specific patient?
  • What management do you recommend?
