About 10% of children and adolescents suffer from severe psychiatric disorders, and another 15% from mild to moderately severe disorders. The emotional, practical and financial burden of psychiatric disorders on patients, families and society is huge, and even more than of oncology, diabetes and cardiovascular disorders together. New scientific insights into the causes and mechanisms that underpin psychiatric disorders in young people, create opportunities and hope.
The aim of this symposium is to reflect on what research in developmental neuroscience and child and adolescent psychiatry (with a focus on ADHD and autism) can and should offer to successfully alleviate the burden of psychiatric disorders in young people in the next 10 years.
