Many children are diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disorder: 1 in 500 children is diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP), 1-2 in 100 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and about 5 in 100 children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). `Neurodevelopmental` indicates that the disorders are characterized by atypical brain development that starts in the early phases of ontogeny.

Our knowledge on the manifestations of the disorders rapidly increases. Yet, our understanding of the aetiology and pathogeneses - and therewith of early detection and early intervention - is limited. For instance, we do not know why infants with similar risk factors, including genetic risk and a lesion of the brain, may develop so differently.

The meeting aims at presenting and discussing the novel insights in the concepts, diagnostics and therapeutic guidance of paediatric neurodisability. The meeting starts by addressing typical child development: what are the current ideas on brain development, motor, cognitive and social development (`embodied cognition`, the tight intertwining of the various components of development)? Via an intermezzo on `nature, nurture and neuroplasticity`, the meeting moves to paediatric neurodisability. First, it addresses the changes in concepts of neurodevelopmental disorders, including those on childhood epilepsy and the role of cerebral visual impairment. Next, guidance of children with neurodisability and their families is addressed. This includes the role of stem cell therapy, family coaching and virtual reality.

The congress will be a meeting place of scientists involved in fundamental aspects of brain development and scientists and clinicians dealing with infants and children with minor and major developmental disorders. Ample time will be devoted to general discussions. Participants are encouraged to bring posters with their latest results.
