Headache : assessment and treatment suited to manual therapy

The course will cover evidence-based manual therapy examination and treatment techniques for specific headache disorders including cervicogenic headache. Of special interest will be evidence based clinical practice, emphasizing classification, clinical examination, evaluation, interpretation, differential diagnosis and treatment. Headache is both a symptom and a disease that requires careful interpretation to determine if physical intervention is suitable. This course will outline the classification of headache suitable to manual therapy and exercise based on current evidence.

This course will be conducted in lecture, tutorial and workshop format for the clinician who is interested in management of headache using manual therapy. It is anticipated that the course content will be suitable to individuals who are seeking new knowledge, to individuals seeking to expand their knowledge and to those individuals seeking the stimulation of clinical interaction. Whilst the course will be presented at a high level this should not be seen as a barrier to participation for those with little or no previous experience in this special area. After attending the course, participants will gain knowledge and skills that will enhance their clinical management of patients with specific headache disorders including cervicogenic headache.

Aims & Learning Objectives :

-To promote an understanding of the mechanisms underlying upper cervical spine involvement in headache as well as classification and management of headache disorders suitable for manual therapy management.
-To develop a strong evidence-based biomedical basis towards the examination, evaluation and physical treatment of the upper cervical spine in specific headache disorders.
-To promote an understanding of the mechanisms for patient presentations of dysfunction such as in upper cervical spine involvement in specific headache disorders.
-To develop an ability to evaluate and differentially diagnose upper cervical spine involvement in specific headache disorders.
-To develop the ability to use physical treatments including exercise in the management upper cervical spine neuromusculoskeletal disorders associated with headache.

Dr Toby Hall is an internationally respected teacher of manual therapy. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Curtin University, Perth Western Australia, and is also Senior Teaching Fellow at The University of Western Australia. He has many years of experience in teaching manual therapy at a postgraduate level, lecturing in many countries on aspects of spinal manual therapy. He has a range of research interests with over 90 peer reviewed publications on the topics of neural tissue pain disorders, cervicogenic headache and the Mulligan Concept. He is the co-author of 2 new textbooks on the Mulligan Concept (Mobilisation with movement: The art and the science & The Mulligan Concept of Manual Therapy: Textbook of Techniques: Elsevier) and has also published a wide range of book chapters in 15 books.
