HBB is an initiative of the American Academy of Pediatrics, developed in collaboration with WHO. Evidence-based educational training program to reduce neonatal mortality in low resource environments. It focuses on teaching nurses and birth attendants neonatal resuscitation techniques. It has been implemented in more than 75 countries.
Aims:
To increase capacity for assessment and resuscitation of newborn infants at birth in order to reduce global mortality from perinatal hypoxia/ischaemia
To provide participants with the skills necessary to teach birth attendants neonatal resuscitation techniques for resource-limited settings
Objectives:
Learn why it may be necessary to use different teaching methods and tools in a low resource setting
Learn how to help birth attendants with different backgrounds and skills to provide a focused and consistent approach to the needs of the baby during the ‘Golden Minute’ – the first minute after birth, including bag-valve-mask ventilation if required
Learn to teach neonatal resuscitation skills using flip-chart, Action Plan and simulation manikin
Learn to dismantle and reassemble a newborn resuscitator (bag-valve-mask) and simple suction device and discuss how these should be cleaned and sterilized between use
Learn how to ensure neonatal resuscitation and stabilization is embedded into the wider care of newborn infants
Learn to help health communities to develop a system for recording and improving the care they deliver
Audience: It is suitable for physicians, midwives, nurses and allied health professionals.
