The oral microbiota, the cooperating microorganisms living in the oral cavity, have a great impact on our oral health. Also, elsewhere in and on our body the human microbiota play an essential role in our physiology and health. Dysbiotic changes in the microbiota lead to various oral and systemic diseases.

Luckily, the human microbiota displays, in composition and activity, a remarkable degree of stability, despite frequent exposure to pathogenic, metabolic, and antimicrobial challenges. An impaired ability to maintain this healthy equilibrium is believed to underlie onset of disease. The key question is how does the human microbiota retains its compositional stability in symbiosis with us, its host. Answering that question will help us with novel early diagnostics, where we see stability derail before clinical damage becomes apparent. More importantly, it will allow us to develop novel prevention strategies, rather that repairing what has gone wrong, we can actively sustain the symbiosis between the microbiota and our body.

This one-day symposium will bring together scientists and clinicians from various fields and disciplines. Very recent new insights in how different factors in the microbe-host-ecosystem and specific host-microbe interactions ensure stability of the human microbiota will be presented.

We will discuss how novel knowledge on the oral microbiota, but also insights from microbiota in different parts of the human body, can be exploited for the benefit of our oral health.
